Buying the Perfect Domain Name to Re-Sell For Profit

Anyone can own a domain name and it can cost as little as ten dollars per year to have one. In the early days of the internet many domain names were available such as ‘business.com’ and ‘casino.com’. If you owned these domain names now you’d have several businessmen asking you how many millions of dollars it would take to buy it off you!

So that was then but how can you buy a valuable domain name nowadays?

One way is to find out about new upcoming companies; if you knew a big media company calling themselves for example “Spicy Media” then if you got the domain name “spicymedia.com” then this would be very valuable to them in the near future.

This is called domain camping and you can lose the domain in a court of law if it has nothing to do with you, so how do you avoid this?

One way is to simply start your own company in a similar name for example start a small business called “Spicy Meatball Media”. Now you have legal right to own the domain name ’spicymedia.com’ as it corresponds to your company name!

What do you want to avoid when buying domain names?

Most companies won’t want any other domain extension than “.com” or it’s country extension such as “.co.uk”. These extensions are the most valuable as people automatically type them in, when was the last time you went to a big website that ended in “.biz”?

Is there any other way to buy the best domain names?

Yes, you need to find what hasn’t been taken yet but trust me so many brilliant names are gone now. Go onto a domain buying website and keep searching, any one word domain is perfect such as ‘gorrila.com’ but again don’t expect to see many free ones.

Do people sell domain names?

Yes, people auction them and this is where you can make long term investment. The domain name ‘whiskey.com’ recently sold for $250,000 which seems a lot but in a few years time this will be an amazing asset to have. More and more people are going online each year including the older generation and new generations as young as 6 years old. More and more produce is also being sold online making the perfect domain name for the drink whisky: ‘whisky.com’ more and more valuable. If you search for the word “whisky” on Google you will certainly spot ‘Whisky.com’ on the first page of results; the same if you searched for “Slimming”, “Chocolate”, or “Baby Knitwear” for example too!

So if you have a good domain name then keep it, it will be worth more in the future, you could say domain names are the new housing market. Make sure to leave your details on any domain you wish to sell by putting a simple web-page on it with your details.
