Are you one of hundreds of domainers that try to buy and sell domains by going solo with your efforts? My guess is you are… Most of the 12-years I have been domaining I have bought, developed and marketed all on my own. A 14-hour day was the norm for years and a lot of frustration and disappointment as well.
A few years back, I decided to go to a local web developers meeting when I lived in Idaho. I shared a ton of information on domaining, the industry and where I saw the industry going. There was an immediate interest and eventually a small local domainer group started. Part of forming the group was to ensure we had developers, marketers and salespeople on the team that understood the Internet and its changes through technology growth.
This lead to valuable and beneficial partnerships between domain owners and developers. It also leads to marketers and sale people selling services on these sites or products. As an owner of generic .com and cctld domain names, I was able to have a developer build some simple architecture and navigation and get some of these names on the Internet. I then teamed with sales and marketing team and I sold developed websites and domain names to targeted customers. The customers were part of the sales and marketing teams network already so it made the effort less intensive.
Keep in mind that what I have just written started with me attending one local meeting for IT focused interests. Today my efforts involve International relationships, more complex architecture of websites and grander sales efforts, but I still have the relationships with the folks in Idaho.
I found the most important aspect of building these relationships was that we had passion for what we were doing. I don’t want to pass judgment on domainers because everyone has their own vision of domaining. However, when they look at this industry as just a business and could care less about relationships, they are missing the best part of domaining. Making friends, sharing knowledge and shared success are what push my buttons.
So if you are a new domainer, develop, sales person or business guru, let’s be friends at www.facebook.com/greatdomains … I would like to hear your opinions, please feel free to post your thoughts.
